How We Do Counseling
Life In Christ Ministries’ discipleship-counseling is Christ-centered and Biblically-based. We hold fast to the exchanged life truths found in God’s Word and disciple clients in understanding the need of exchanging self-sufficiency (self-life) for Christ’s sufficiency (Christ’s life). One of the ministry’s key scripture verses is Galatians 2:20.
“I have been crucified with Christ and it is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me. The life that I now live in the flesh [physical body] I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” (NASB)
When the reality of this verse is revealed and appropriated, the joy, freedom and victory sought in life will be found.
Life in Christ Ministries employs a discipleship-counseling method that models dependence on Christ. Therefore, our discipleship-counselors do not have a set plan of action to work through with our clients but instead depend upon the Holy Spirit to determine the topic and format of each session. Our desire is that the Holy Spirit would guide and direct each session with the discipler’s attitude and posture being that of a surrendered, temporary assistant to the Holy Spirit. Seeking to bring the client to dependence on Christ rather than ongoing counseling, we do not practice long-term, indefinite counseling. Therefore, 10-12 weekly sessions can be expected with the understanding that there is some flexibility in the time-frame under the Holy Spirit’s direction. For out-of-town clients or those for whom weekly sessions are not feasible, we offer an intensive format where clients are seen for 3-5 hours per day over 3-4 days in one week.
Life In Christ Ministries does not practice psychotherapy and is not equipped for emergency crises care. The traditional recommendations for suicidal clients involve psychiatric/psychological care and/or inpatient help. We are a discipleship-outreach ministry. Whereas we can sometimes help people in this area by sharing spiritual truths, our type of outreach can take time that people needing emergency care cannot afford.
We offer a 50-minute consultation that is free of charge. This allows both the discipleship-counselor and the client to determine if our ministry and method as well as personalities are a good fit.
Some typical topics and presenting issues that may be addressed in the discipleship-counseling process include

John 10:10 says, “The thief comes only to kill, steal, and destroy, but I have come that you might have life and have it abundantly.” (NASB) It is the desire of Life In Christ Ministries that all come to know experientially the abundant life Christ came to give.
